This group of artists - which included the Danes Asger Jorn and Carl-Henning Pedersen, the Dutchmen Karel Appel, Constant and Corneille, and the Belgian Pierre Alechinksy - cherished the ideal of making the way free for a new people's art for the new society to come. Their ideals were expressed in several publications, exhibitions and joint works. Niet alleen als schilder maar ook als schrijver stortte hij zich in die periode op het experiment. Tot nu toe verborgen gebleven bronnen en grotendeels onbekend werk vormen het uitgangspunt in dit boek, geschreven door Willemijn Stokvis.In het isolement van de jaren van crisis en bezetting kwam Brands tot abstracte en surrealistische experimenten. Zijn toekomstige Cobramakkers Appel en Corneille raakten daarvan zeer van onder de indruk. Brands' succes direct na de oorlog droeg er ongetwijfeld toe bij dat hij vanaf 1947 de somberheid van de bezettingsjaren achter zich kon laten, en nadien losbarstte in een vitale expressionistische uitdrukkingswijze in warme kleuren.
